Astrological Counseling

“My evenings are taken up very largely with astrology. I make horoscopic calculations in order to find a clue to the core of psychological truth. Some remarkable things have turned up which will certainly appear incredible to you.”

~Carl Jung in a letter to Sigmund Freud (June 12, 1911)

Astrological Counseling

I offer astrological counseling for psycho-spiritual exploration, understanding, and transformation. Astrology utilized in this way can be a missing key for deep inner work and can shed light on the path towards greater harmony with the natural rhythms and cycles of one’s life journey. My approach to astrology is to share the potentials and opportunities I see while exploring how the symbols and archetypes are manifesting uniquely for each individual. Astrology is a wonderful tool for self-knowledge and a help in times of challenge or transition. It can facilitate tremendous insight and peace, as well as provide timelines for certain archetypal or energetic influences reflected in our lives and inner states of being. Consultations available for birth chart exploration, current influences, relationship dynamics, and timing for important events.

Astrological Rites of Passage

As the planets move through the sky and through the zodiac, they affect each one of us differently depending on how they connect with one’s individual birthchart. There are some astrological events, however, that happen to everyone at approximately the same age, which mark important rites of passage and correspond with certain life phases. Here is a list of a few of the major ones:

Saturn return (Saturn conjunct Saturn), first one at age 29:

This is the symbolic entrance into adulthood — new structures are built or current structures break down if they are not in alignment with one’s proper track in life, responsibility increases, and/or obstacles must be overcome.

Second one at age 59: This is a time of passing on the torch to the next generation — all that has been learned and achieved can now be shared fully, and let go of, as one prepares for the last third of life.

Pluto square Pluto, varies due to Pluto’s irregular orbit, currently takes place at age 35-37, but in certain other eras, it was around age 62:

This is a significant turning point involving the integration of one’s shadow — can be experienced as intense pressure, forced growth, or having to surrender. This eventually leads to regeneration, transformation, empowerment and finding new purpose and meaning in life.

Neptune square Neptune, age 40-41:

This is a spiritual turning point — the need arises for direct experience of something greater than the ego self. Initially it can manifest as confusion, doubt, or escapism, but leads to a shift in consciousness.

Uranus opposite Uranus, around age 42:

Uranus brings freedom from that which is limiting or preventing one from being true to oneself. Sudden changes and shock often accompany this transit, but culminate in the awakening to a new life.

Moon’s Nodal return, every 18.6 years, at approximately age 19, 38, 56 and so on:

The nodes have to do with the soul’s direction in the larger scheme of one’s life. The nodal returns are moments in time that may be particularly destined and feel like they have a karmic quality to them.

Jupiter return, every 12 years, at age 12, 24, 36, 48 and so on:

These are times of growth, opportunities, blessings, and abundance connected with the area of life where natal Jupiter is in the birthchart.

I would love to hear about people’s experiences with these major passages through time. Feel free to contact me with questions or comments.

Venus is in Aquarius ♒

Venus is in Aquarius ♒ from Dec 20-Jan 13. The modern ruler of Aquarius is Uranus ♅. Uranus rules flashes of intuition that come with sudden clarity. Venus rules all things to do with love, relationships, beauty, and art — so the intuitions that come may be especially connected with these Venus areas… One way to discern whether it is a well-founded intuition is if it feels like it came from outside of your ordinary mind and if you have a sense of knowing that accompanies it (despite any resistance to it such as fear). Uranus ♅ turns direct

Early on Dec 10, Uranus ♅, the planet of lightning bolt change, revolution, and freedom, turns direct after five months of being retrograde. Generally, when an outer planet is retrograde, its influence is experienced more on the internal level. When it stations (the time period when it slows down and appears to change direction), its influence is intensified and dramatic. Once it turns direct, outward manifestation becomes more apparent. Uranus is turning direct at the very beginning of Aries ♈, the part of the zodiac that epitomizes abundant raw energy and fresh new beginnings. This is a potent shift.

New Moon in Libra ♎

A seed is planted at the New Moon (9/27), but its outward manifestation is still invisible, just as the Moon appears dark to us at this phase of the lunar cycle. We can not yet see what will become, yet we can invest energy in our intentions. “A new moon teaches gradualness and deliberation and how one gives birth to oneself slowly. Patience with small details makes perfect a large work, like the universe.” (Rumi)

This New Moon is in Libra, opposite Uranus and square Pluto, bringing more energy to this potentially challenging or urgent-feeling, yet transformative configuration in the sky. We have been feeling this intense square between the god of change (Uranus) and the god of the underworld/unconscious (Pluto) especially strongly since mid-Sep when Venus triggered it — stirring up relationship and/or financial issues. Tomorrow (9/28) Mercury and the Sun complete the square by both opposing Pluto on the same day. Our core beings and attachments, as well as habitual thought patterns may be getting shaken up as old issues surface or big changes occur rapidly. All this is in the service of living more authentically and healing deep parts of the psyche. In the next couple weeks Venus, Mercury, and the Sun will conjoin Saturn in Libra helping us find our balance and stabilize once we land on new ground. Also, 4 planets in Libra brings focus to the sacredness of the significant others in our lives — how we are enriched by them and our own capacity to love. Read more...

The Autumnal Equinox

The energy of this Autumnal Equinox = decisive action inspired by authenticity and intuition, but balanced with heart and empathy for others. (Mars in Leo trine Uranus in Aries, and Sun enters Libra)

“Let the things that enter into your life wake you up.”

The Moon entered Aries ♈ today, conjoined Uranus ♅, and squared Pluto ♇. “Some of us may feel unsettled and grumbly” (Jim Sher). Moon in Aries is ready to fight, Uranus adds shock, and the square to Pluto digs up unpleasant old stuff. The upside is that whatever is brought to the surface can now, with courage, be seen, understood, handled, or let go of. ‎”Let the things that enter into your life wake you up.” (Pema Chodron)

Mars triggers the Uranus/Pluto square

Mars ♂, the warrior archetype, triggers the Uranus/Pluto square this week. There may be volatility in the air, as we actively struggle, internally or externally, for the freedom and change that is needed (Mars square Uranus on 8/9). Also, there may be awareness now that a powerful process of death and rebirth in the deep psyche, personally and/or collectively, is happening (Mars opposite Pluto 8/11).

The Uranus/Pluto square

Right now in early August, the square between Uranus and Pluto is within 1 degree of being exact. It will be exact several times from 2012-2015. But on the collective scale we have been feeling the building tension of this challenging yet transformative aspect for a couple years already. Both the need for freedom from limitations and the need to surrender the egoic separative perspective may force things to a boil until true change occurs.

The constructive use of Pluto (♇) energy involves “submission” to a larger purpose beyond our own individual ideas of what we want. The constructive use of Uranus (♅) energy involves taking the risk to break from internalized conventions or outdated structures that prevent growth and freedom. The square between two planets indicates turning a corner. I have heard it said that with a square, something happens.

(”submission” is Steven Forest’s word for Pluto)

Gemini Moon conjunct Mars, Sun trine Uranus, and Mercury’s Shadow

7/27: The mood is one of action and drive with Moon conjunct Mars, so one may feel bold and assertive. Also, Sun trine Uranus today is conducive for harmonious alignment with what frees you to be your true self and express your genius.

However, important ideas and decisions made now during Mercury’s shadow (7/15-8/2), can be unstable and may go back and forth for reevaluation during Mercury retrograde (8/2-8/26). This back and forth is likely to apply both personally and collectively (political, national changes and decisions, etc.)... Rather than trying to solidify something now, it is a great time for reflective pondering and, what is for you, revolutionary thinking.

Also, regarding the image above, the Moon is in Gemini ♊ today. Butterflies are a symbol for the Gemini archetype - flitting from one person, idea, or project, etc. to the next - but spending moments of whole-hearted and unfeigned interest with each. Curious and intelligent, Gemini embodies the bliss of soaking up new information. No shrinking back from life here!

The Moon is triggering the tense T-square in the sky

Last night and today the Moon is triggering the tense T-square in the sky (first conjunct Uranus ♅, then square Pluto ♇, then opposite Saturn ♄). Turbulent feelings and thoughts, and seemingly irreconcilable conflicts, which we have been working with over the last couple months, may have again bubbled or burst up to the surface to be dealt with... With the Moon in Aries ♈, we may act decisively.

Even if the conflict appears external, it is primarily an internal one between parts of self. Some examples are: the need for partnership vs. the need for independence, maintaining tradition vs. breaking new ground, holding on to the familiar vs. taking a leap of faith, or confronting vs. avoiding, etc.
